How to Play Klondike Solitaire
The goal is to move all 52 cards onto the four foundation piles, one per suit (Clubs, Diamonds, Hearts, Spades), built up from Ace to King.
The Layout
- Tableau — seven columns of cards. Only the top card of each column is face-up. You can move face-up cards (or stacks) onto a card of the opposite color and one rank higher.
- Stock — the draw pile in the top-left. Click or tap it to flip a card to the waste pile.
- Waste — the flipped card from the stock. You can play it onto the tableau or foundations.
- Foundations — the four piles in the top-right. Build each suit from Ace up to King to win.
Basic Rules
- In the tableau, cards must alternate red and black (e.g. a black 7 on a red 8).
- Only a King (or a stack led by a King) can be placed on an empty tableau column.
- When the stock runs out, click it again to recycle the waste pile back into the stock.
- The game is won when all four foundation piles are complete (Ace through King).
Game Modes
- Klondike Solitaire Turn One — draw one card at a time. The relaxed, beginner-friendly version.
- Klondike Solitaire Turn Three — draw three cards at once. The classic hard mode.
Tips and Strategy
- Uncover face-down cards first. Revealing hidden cards in long tableau columns gives you more options.
- Don't rush to the foundations. Keeping lower cards in the tableau can help you build longer sequences.
- Empty columns are powerful. Use them as temporary storage to reorganize stacks.
- Kings fill empty columns. Move a King only when you have a useful sequence to place beneath it.
- Cycle the stock strategically. The waste pile recycles — if you're stuck, keep cycling and look for the move that unlocks a new card. If nothing opens up after a full pass, change something on the tableau first — or don't be afraid to deal a fresh game.
